OEC Students Attend HIV/AIDS Awareness Program
The history of the HIV epidemic is a relatively short one. In the early years, HIV was unknown, feared, untreatable and often fatal. However, over the past 30 years we have come a long way in our understanding of it, where it came from, how it evolved, and most importantly, how to treat and prevent it.
HIV prevention programmes are interventions that aim to halt the transmission of HIV. They are implemented to either protect an individual and their community, or rolled out as public health policies.
Community service begins at home and as such, a program was held on our campus on Friday 27th November and a number of our ladies had the opportunity to attend. The main aim of this program was to educate and evoke awareness about HIV/AIDS to our students, both Chinese or foreign.
Emphasis was made on the fact that “Prevention is better than cure.” As OECians we were of the view that nano-sized HIV is smart enough to fool our immune system and therefore, there is no sense of being the most superior life form than any other on earth if we do not learn how to fight against HIV.
We then had an interesting time handing out fliers and other necessary tools for our awareness’ sake. On the whole it was a well-thought out activity that made us stop to think about the value of life and how to maintain good health and prevent HIV/AIDS.
